Le genre doit son nom \u00e0 la\u00a0r\u00e9gion d&rsquo;Araucanie\u00a0(<i>Arauco<\/i>) au\u00a0Chili\u00a0dont sont originaires deux esp\u00e8ces du genre. Des restes fossilis\u00e9s indiquent qu&rsquo;au\u00a0M\u00e9sozo\u00efque\u00a0ils \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 abondants dans l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re sud<br \/>\n<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Ce sont des\u00a0conif\u00e8res\u00a0aux feuilles en aiguilles ou en \u00e9cailles triangulaires leur donnant un aspect tout \u00e0 fait particulier<br \/>\nLe Pin de Norfolk (<em>Araucaria heterophylla<\/em>\u00a0syn.\u00a0<em>Araucaria excelsa<\/em>) est l\u2019un des rares conif\u00e8res (mais non un pin !) \u00e0 pouvoir \u00eatre cultiv\u00e9 en int\u00e9rieur. Dans son milieu d\u2019origine, sur l\u2019\u00cele de Norfolk, situ\u00e9e dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Pacifique entre la Nouvelle-Z\u00e9lande et la Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie, il peut atteindre 60 m de haut mais chez vous, il ne d\u00e9passera gu\u00e8re 1,50 m sachant que sa croissance est lente ! Il pousse d\u2019environ 15 cm par an, ce qui correspond \u00e0 une couronne de branches environ.
